I would reiterate what FWAAA said and just add some personal experience from the past. These airplanes never were very reliable. Often suffered from mechanical glitches at the last minute before departure. I spent two weeks standing on a jetbridge at DFW once for no other reason than to monitor the departure process of the MD11 fleet and report up through the food chain about things that went wrong and why the fleet had such a low reliability rate. Our Japanese Customers reportedly had a name for the airplane that translated into English as "the bird that does not fly."
