Dumb question: how do you even request upgrades when traveling with companions? When I travel alone there is always a box to click to request. But it is never there when others are on my reservation.
The box should be there for the companion assuming 1) the flights are eligible for sticker upgrades, and 2) there is only one companion on your PNR.
You say when "others" are on your reservation, if you have more than one companion the box won't be there as you can only upgrade one, and the system doesn't know how to pick. You can call AA in these scenarios to request an upgrade for only one of your companions.
