And that's the exact reason I questioned this... I was coming at it more from my experience of airline programs. Interesting that hotel schemes don't extend the same flexibility.
It's always in their interest to push customers to book direct, and will only reward them for doing so. When they've paid commissions / accepted lower rates through third party sites they will not want to reward their members
