AA would, generally speaking, prefer to keep your money and transport you than give you your money back. I suspect this policy is aimed at reducing costs associated with rebooking on other airlines, so I am expecting rerouting options to become more limited and for AA to adopt more of a “rebook on AA or you’re on your own” stance. Not only that, but if you had an upgraded ticket - miles, SWU, etc. - I suspect fewer efforts will be made to keep you in the premium cabin, especially when rebooking on other airlines is offered. So when your SWU trip goes sideways, they might get you there but shunt you to the back of the plane. I’m not expecting wholesale mass strandings.
