Didn't see this question answered, and I have a similar question. I recently opened a Citi AAdvantage Visa that came with a miles bonus and a $200 statement credit for AA purchases. I'm assuming I can just buy a $200 AA gift card (for free basically) and use it later at my leisure. Can anyone think of a reason that won't work?
