I never have, I'm really confrontation adverse - but I've seen the battle play out several times, and the flight attendant has always just parroted the open seating policy, and the person asking to sit in the open seat has always gotten the open seat.
Anyone middle-seat-phobic is apt to play out dark scenarios. Better to pre-suppose the worst.
