Went to Vienna, Klagenfurt, and Salzburg in August and found Austria to be fairly easy to navigate. Flew to and from Vienna. In both cases, the most stressful part was at the gate on the transatlantic where the document check was the most stringent and the crowds a bit overwhelming. I recommend getting to the gate a bit early to scope it out and hopefully do the document check early as I did. Hotels everywhere wanted to see the vax card, as well as restaurants, cafes, swimming pools, etc. But the process was always efficient and they didn't blink an eye about seeing a US vax card (one concern I had before I went). I took the train within Austria and also public transport in each city and found compliance with mask requirements to be good (better than in the US).

Having been to Austria many times, I found this trip to be less different than I expected in that I was able to do all the usual things I do with some extra precautions. Vienna was less crowded than usual, most things were open, and people were glad to see tourists. Klagenfurt was beautiful and the people extra nice as always. Salzburg seemed much busier and less enjoyable, but still was probably not at maximum tourist loads for August. The only advice I would provide is to take things a little slower than usual and focus on outdoor activities to the extent possible.

The biggest challenge I had was the German rail strikes in August, which made me decide to substitute Salzburg for Munich as it was not clear I would be able to make it back to Austria in time for my flight home if I went to Munich.

I got the COVID test for return to the US done at Vienna Airport Health Center and it was excellent. Very efficient and helpful staff, only 25 Euros for the antigen test, and results within an hour. Also on the return, the airline told me I needed to fill out and sign an affadavit form confirming I had tested negative for COVID, but no one in either Austria or the US ever wanted to see it, just the document showing the negative test result was sufficient.
