We stayed here for 1 night this weekend. We were attending a party at a friend's house a few miles away and didn't want to drive home (about an hour away) afterwards.. The hotel was completely sold out, primarily with evacuees from LA. We were pre-blocked into the Houston Suite (1000 sq ft according to the web site) and this showed in the app the morning of our stay. It was 2 large rooms; one with a sitting area, a table that would seat 6, and a full kitchen with a grill and cooktop combo, a dishwasher, and a full size refrigerator. The second room was the bedroom with a small sitting area, a desk, and a king size bed. The room was definitely showing it's age with the bathroom looking like something out of the 80s. The bed was extremely soft, but that seemed to be more by design than by wear& tear. The bath amenities were presumably leftovers from the Omni days as they were a brand called Nest that I've never seen in a Hyatt.
Breakfast was served in the restaurant with a full menu. In addition to the eggs, omelets, pancakes, and waffles one would expect to see, the menu offered dishes like huevos rancheros, smoked salmon, and shrimp and grits. In spite of a full house, the restaurant was relatively empty and the service was "leisurely". The food was fine and the serving sizes were generous. I asked the server to include a gratuity on the check and it seems that everything was covered by the Glob benefit. At least I haven't seen a supplemental charge yet.
Interestingly, the hotel was originally opened as the Hyatt Regency West Houston in 1983. While it does have an open atrium design, I don't recall seeing another Hyatt quite like it. It was sold in 1992 and branded as a Marriott and then as an Omni, which it remained until last Tuesday. The public areas were recently renovated by Omni and the current plan is to update the guest rooms starting next year and over the next 18-24 months, depending on COVID impacts.
Our stay was fine, and if I needed to be in the area again, I wouldn't hesitate to come back. It's one of two Cat 1 full service Hyatt's in the Houston area and our room rate was just over $100. The hotel is right off I10, a major highway through Houston, and the area isn't particularly walkable. There's a lot of restaurants, shopping, etc within a short drive though so it may be not a bad choice for a cheap staycation.
Thanks for the review! I am disappointed to hear that the rooms haven't been renovated - hopefully, the reflag will encourage the owners to expedite this process as the rooms looked pretty rough based on the latest photos (one of the 2020 reviews mentioned fleas, but of course, that could be an outlier).
