Thanks FlyerBeek for your reply - decided not to risk the same day connection and have booked to travel MIA-MCO on one of the next morning flights. I have had so much hassle even on domestic to international connections at MIA in the past I just didn't want more of the same with this trip.

Sounds like a smart decision, in my opinion. Yes, you will pickup the bags when you arrive BGI-MIA and then recheck them the next morning MIA-MCO. When you check-in in BGI you can ensure they are tagged only to MIA, but you'll need to collect them regardless of what the baggage tag says after your clear immigration in MIA.
