It's not quite a mile (about 3600 feet) from the Kohala Lobby to the the transportation entrance of the main resort. However, there is a free shuttle between both that ran every 30 minutes that is included when you stay at one of the 3 HGVC locations.
If you have kids, I'd recommend Kings' Land (same shuttle). It has better pools.
