1) One time, I was at a restaurant counter chatting with someone - the topic came to credit cards. I think I had a CSR or something, and the guy and his wife had Amex Platinum accounts. We were talking about lounges, points, etc. I said "You know, you can get more points on restaurants if you get the Chase card or get an Amex Gold." The guy says "Nah, I really like the Amex Centurion Lounge, so i think we will keep using Amex Platinum all the time." I wanted to point out that was a non sequitur, but I didn't
2) I have two buddies that use Amex Platinums when we go out to restaurant/bars and split bills. I have referred the Amex Gold to both of them (I almost never refer cards to anyone) trying to get referral bonuses, but both of them ignored the referrals and both continue to use Amex Platinum for dining
Maximizing card spend is something a lot of people dont focus on. For me, I don't understand why an Amex customer (who likes the service, etc) that holds an Amex Platinum doesn't also hold either an Amex Gold or an Amex Green. I was temporarily on an Amex Platinum-only set up for a few months this year and hated the lack of MR accumulation monthly. I now hold the Green for the first time.
