2 passengers, same first & last -- not possible same PNR?

Anyone have a workaround for two different passengers (i.e. parent with status + minor child no status) to book together to share elite benefits on the flight? Same first names, different middle names, obviously different birthdates, TSA numbers, etc. but the Alaska system returns the following error message:

"Travelers with the same first and last name must be booked in separate reservations."

Seriously? We've never seen this situation on other airlines and it's the first time trying to book this combination of passengers on Alaska. I know we can link the reservations after the fact but I know that doesn't do much.
