Maybe Air France's loads are not as good as BA's.
I wouldn't discredit Air France at all. However, British Airways do have at least one Dispatcher on each shift specifically detailed to a Load Planning function. He/she is supposed to be advised of any Special Passenger requirements (eg stretcher fitment), Cargo, oversized.awkward/overweight Baggage (Bikes/Windsurfers/Canoes/Musical Instruments) Live Animals, Firearms etc and plans the aircraft loading accordingly.

This may be the reason why BA don't often require last minute seat changes - only when something catches us unawares!
