Typically the retailer (LCBO) or the manufacturer (Eg Diageo) could pay for bonus miles. Let's say they offer 100 AE mile for 1L JW Black.
So you could buy $100 LCBO GC at Metro, earn 500 MR miles, convert them to 500 AE miles, use the GC at LCBO on a promotional product and net another 100 miles for a total of 600. Yes, I know a lot of work for 600 miles.
For what it's worth, bonus mile/point promos are virtually always paid by the vendor as part of their promo package, and usually with some kind of cap on the maximum number of miles to be issued or volume of product to be sold under the promo, in order to protect themselves against biting off more than they can chew. Practical translation --> if you see something that appeals, take advantage quickly before inventory levels tank, since supplies are usually limited.
With Aeroplan being a new LCBO partner, and the holiday season approaching in a few months, I expect there will be quite a bit of promo activity over the next couple of months. Something tells me a LOT of people will be getting bottles as Christmas gifts this year.
