What is the benefit of using gift cards at all? Do people buy them at a discount or something? Just seems like such a hassle. AMEX in Canada has a number of promos this summer with statement credits for hotel stays. Gift card purchases are not supposed to count but they do so you can buy a gift card at a Marriott in province A and use it for part of the bill on a cash stay in province B and get twice the rebate.
