Value for money...who knows.
It does scream petty when one is entitled to an upgrade and the hotel refuse it despite having empty rooms.
However, I’ve given up caring about this, I was entitled to one at the FS Madrid, was told not possible. Got to the room, the GM called me in the room and said they can move me. Not as bad as being moved next day but still annoying as I got in late at night and was already tired.
Other times I just remain firm but polite at check in.
The problem is the hotel itself wants to offer the upgrades, but too many jobsworths feel they are “doing the right thing” by not giving the upgrade. It’s as if they don’t even realise that it costs the hotel nothing if the room was going to be empty anyway.
I know a lot of people object to people expecting upgrades, but being entitled to it isn’t the same thing. Also, airlines have different catering in premium cabins, hotels for the most part dont.
