What do you mean by "make it work"? Or how do you quantify that?

A while ago I put together a spreadsheet for my various spend categories by year and could play out what-if scenarios depending on various card usage strategies, valuations, etc. At that time, Gold shook out to be objectively a better choice than Platinum if I had to go all in on one or the other. For someone else with different spending, could easily be the other way around. Of those options you listed, the Delta one is a non-starter for me as I almost exclusively use AA for domestic travel for the convenience of non-stop flights. If I was living around ATL rather than CLT it'd be a different story!
