Not being able to add pages and getting lots of stamps meant I was going through passports in 2 years. Not an issue now😂
Totally agree re. Japan — entry / exit takes up a whole page. I use a secondary passport (which has far more pages) for Japan for this reason — I try wherever that passport doesn't require a visa but still...
