i have canceled the original flight, asked for a refund, and then purchased the lower price ticket. my last refund (due to changing departure cities) took about three weeks. you have to be able to carry the balance of the new ticket while waiting for the refund to appear. i just did this last week (ticket price dropped 20%) and the agent said refunds are taking 4-8 weeks. we will see.
