Courtyard Ottawa East = More Spacious than Hotels Downtown

Introduction The last time I stayed at Courtyard Ottawa East, it was before the Starwood integration was complete therefore I did not receive a suite upgrade at that time. With the full-service hotels downtown having limited services (for example, no lounge open) I thought I would return to CY to see what has changed in the last couple of years. The good news is that I received a suite upgrade this time as Ambassador Elite guest but I was somewhat surprised that they still use 10 CAD Food & Beverage vouchers for breakfast despite the Marriott rules saying it should be 10 USD. Room Oddly at first I could not find my room - I did not realize that my room door was between two of the three elevator doors – what a weird set-up. I thought my room would probably be very noisy but thankfully there was a door we could close right off the entrance; it was effectively some kind of room entrance lobby, and the soundproofing was excellent because the hallway traffic and elevator noise were completely blocked off. I was upgraded to an Executive Suite which was more spacious than the room types I had before but unfortunately my room did not have a stand-alone shower, unlike the smaller room types I had before which had both a stand-alone shower and a separate tub. It is strange that the suites have more space available overall yet the bathroom was smaller.Overall the room was nothing special but it was in decent condition and remains a notch above the older 1970s style hotels downtown such as Delta and Sheraton. I also received a welcome amenity gift: a fruit plate with chocolates. Dining At the moment many hotels in Ottawa offer terrible covid breakfasts and the good news was that at CY we can use the vouchers for anything on the F&B menu which include dinner, which is a plus for people who do not want to eat breakfast at the hotel. In that regard for the moment I personally prefer the voucher system at limited service hotels than bad breakfasts at full service hotels. Unfortunately as mentioned above the vouchers are still 10 CAD per person per day – they have not bulged despite the criticism in the early days of the roll out of this credit: it should be 10 USD not 10 CAD. The other issue is that it remains off limits to accumulate the vouchers from one day to another and if a voucher is not entirely used in one transaction then the balance is lost. Wifi Wifi worked well with speeds of 15 Mbps. Overall Overall for people who have a car and who don’t need to be downtown, in my opinion CY Ottawa East can be a choice that works. It is one of the better Marriott hotels to stay in Ottawa for people who care about suite upgrades and the hardware is not bad so I can recommend it.
