regarding checking luggage to the final destination, is it possible to do this between *A carriers? i'm flying NAN-LAX on NZ and LAX-PHL UA on two different PNRs. i will still have to go through customs, but then i can just drop it into the connecting flights section rather than go to the check-in counters. thanks.

they may not be able to link records, but if your final destination is in a second PNR, the check-in agent should be able to add the second segment to the first flight in order to check a bag through to the final destination.
