If you wish, you may choose to check your bags at ATH and collect them in LAX. They will be stored at the T5 baggage store overnight for a connection less than 24 hours. If you prefer to collect them in LHR just ask for them to be tagged to LHR and no further. It's up to you.

I will leave the part about traveling into London to those with more knowledge than me.
