I think changing online a couple of times would be best bet, but seem to recall that itineraries with discount codes (like companion fares) may have a limit to the number of changes that can be made without agent assistance.
I was able to call & get a wallet credit for a fare reduction after I booked, still using my companion fare, which had technically expired (I literally booked on the last day it was valid, of course the fare reduction was only for the regular ticket). I am MVP, so maybe that had something to do with the agent’s willingness to do it. YMMV.
