Yes, TED no longer offers a full can, unless asked. Indeed on some flights, they only do one full beverage run, including the medium PHX-ORD flight, but they come around with water and OJ and lemonade. Another trick is to ask for two kinds of beverage -- like water and OJ or coffee and OJ. If you ask me, that is cheap...

Frontier offers a full can of beverage at all times, even on a shorter LAS-DEN or DEN-PHX.

I don't see how not serving a can saving UA's money, but I think TED's a/c have less storage space and smaller galleys.
