There used to be a system whereby you could leave your contraband with customs as you went landside and then pick it up again when departing. Never used it myself so don't know the exact process or how reliable it was.
There have been reports of people using it here on the forum and the system has worked well for them. The key message I seem to remember is to be very upfront with customs that you have prohibited products you wish to deposit with them during a temporary entry to the country.
