Why AA does rolling delays... that's a management decision. And a very poor one.
We had a rolling delays situation eventually leading to a cancellation recently where we eventually made it onto the plane, were about to be offloaded again, and had to inform the pilots/FAs that the flight was cancelled as they were announcing that they had no idea.
OP, I would check whether the credit card you used to make this reservation had trip delay/interruption insurance.
