How many of them were purchased? I remember Marriott purchasing Protea and Delta in the years just before the merger, but probably those weren't the only ones. Is there a list somewhere of which hotel brands Marriott developed vs purchased?
Before the Marriott-Starwood merger, Marriott officially had 19 brands, although there were (and still are) additional sub-brands. I’ve identified the ones that Marriott acquired. Marriott launched all the other brands, sometimes with a partner.

To keep this post somewhat on topic, early in the life of Fairfield, there were three kinds of Fairfield properties: Fairfield Inn (with just regular rooms), Fairfield Inn & Suites (with regular rooms and larger one-room suites), and Fairfield Suites (with all larger one-room suites). The Fairfield Suites brand was renamed to Springhill Suites.

The 19 brands were:

The Ritz-Carlton (acquired)
Bvlgari
EDITION
JW Marriott
Autograph Collection
Renaissance (acquired)
Marriott Hotels
Delta Hotels and Resorts (acquired)
Marriott Executive Apartments
Marriott Vacation Club (acquired and then renamed)
Gaylord Hotels (acquired)
AC Hotels (acquired)
Courtyard
Residence Inn (acquired)
SpringHill Suites
Fairfield
TownePlace Suites
Protea Hotels (acquired)
Moxy Hotels

Here’s a timeline that shows when the company acquired or launched each of the Marriott legacy brands:

Starwood had 11 brands. You could count all of them as brands that Marriott acquired.

St. Regis
The Luxury Collection

Design Hotels
Westin
Le Méridien
Sheraton
Four Points
Aloft
Element
