I can't speak to NH at LAX (since I typically transit there when flying NH, so I've never dealt with the check-in agents) but the NH agents at HND have always checked-through my bags no problem when I've connected to a non-*A carrier on separate tickets (usually AA in my case).
All that said, even if the transit is allowed, I'd do my best to travel carry-on only.
