...I'd first make the reservation in a smoking room.
Then, call the Diamond desk and ask for it to be swapped.
If that's unsuccessful, call the hotely directly.

In at least 3 cases I can remember recently, a similar situation has instantly yielded a fix AND a confirmed upgrade ahead of check-in!

Membership has its privileges.
