Unless you a frequent guest of that Hotel, I cant think of 1 reason why theyd agree to taking the cert or pts res over the $$$. simply since they get little to nothing for an award stay, that is unless you you can provide some proof that it was out of your control eg proof that you flight was CXed by the Carrier or you or someone in your home was hospitalized etc etc but even then it would depend I think how the hotel has been fairing
I wouldn’t discount that approach in general. It costs you little to call them up, be nice, and kindly ask to cancel and waive the fee. Some may just go ahead and do it, even without asking for a reason for cancellation. If they don’t, you’re no worse off than before.
It can sound strange, but sometimes people do something for others even if they don’t have to. Isn’t that what good service supposed to be about anyway? To do things beyond the bare minimum?
