I assume you're not Gold? If you are then you should be able to phone BA and have them assign seats for your wife and daughter even though they are on separate bookings. It's one of the benefits of Gold status. If you are not Gold then, unfortunately, you will need to wait until check-in to choose seats or, as you have alluded to, pay.
ahh I didn't know I could do that. I called to link the bookings but didn't request a seat allocation. I’ll call them again tomorrow.
