Are you only connecting in YVR (not stopping more than 24 hours) on your way to YYC? If so, then you can actually just use a regular SWU and that will get you an upgrade all the way from NRT to YYC.

The NA upgrades cert are good from Y/M/U on domestic/transborder flights.
