My procedure is as soon as the seat belt sign comes off, I grab my bag from the overhead, stick it in front of the outstretched legrest and there is no longer room for anyone to cross over. Never a problem for me.

I've now stored this (or hopefully) in the back of my mind and will use this "technique" for my SFO-CDG-SFO flights.
