I've been kicking myself about this-- i usually carry them in a neck pouch when i have to carry them, but this trip was a comedy of errors in judgement. Interestingly enough they left her credit cards and cash in the wallet and just took the passports. For those of you w/ travel plans, I was told by multiple people (hotel staff, embassy staff, and my transfer driver) that this year the pickpockets in Athens are focusing on historical sites and museums, and not on the metro as in years past. We also travelled extensively by metro and it was never so crowded that i couldn't keep track of my stuff-- I think in the sites/museum, we let our guard down a bit (and really shouldn't have had the passports in that purse).
Sorry again whimsey21 that this happened to you and the family and thank you very much for providing the very helpful info regarding historical sites. Unfortunately, they are extremely "skilful" at their "job" and I know very savvy, physically-strong male travellers that have been pickpocketed in places like Rome and Barcelona. When in Athens, I even sometimes leave the phone in the room. It is probably the only place in Europe where I would do it.
