As embarrassing as it is to remember, I appreciate the need for data points to help other travellers. We were at the Acropolis and Acropolis museum when the passports were pickpocketed from my wife's purse sometime between buying tickets (where we showed the kids' passports) and leaving the sites. I've been kicking myself about this-- i usually carry them in a neck pouch when i have to carry them, but this trip was a comedy of errors in judgement. Interestingly enough they left her credit cards and cash in the wallet and just took the passports. For those of you w/ travel plans, I was told by multiple people (hotel staff, embassy staff, and my transfer driver) that this year the pickpockets in Athens are focusing on historical sites and museums, and not on the metro as in years past. We also travelled extensively by metro and it was never so crowded that i couldn't keep track of my stuff-- I think in the sites/museum, we let our guard down a bit (and really shouldn't have had the passports in that purse).
