You can change the first segment to the date one year from the original ticket issue.
For example, if the original award ticket was issued on 1st March 2021 (date of issue, not date of 1st segment), you can change the first segment to only 1st March 2022.
After you fly the first segment on 1st Sep 2021, your ticket becomes valid through 1st Sep 2022.
Sorry I'm a little dense so let me make sure I understand fully. Since ANA releases its calendar 355 days out, technically, if my first segment flight outbound starts on 9/1, the latest I would need to call for flight change would be 8/31 and the farthest out I can change my first segment is August 21, 2022 since the award calendar would be 10 day short of 1 year. But once I updated the outbound, I can now wait a couple more weeks to rebook the return segment as long as it's flown before 9/1/2022?
Can you let me know if I am wrong in any of my assumption above. Also, I recall some of the domestic airline has policy for close dates flight changes within 7 days. Do I need to watch out for anything like that with ANA?
I suppose the best thing that can happen to me would be to have a huge schedule change or cancellation that result in a free cancellation, then I can have the points back to rebook at any time frame I would prefer.
We had hope to visit Seoul in autumn and if anything would book late Sept/Oct in 2022 rather than moving up the calendar to the hotter summer...
