PZ (the booking class used for upgrades, including MUA) was available on the red-eye.
Currently the same-day change feature is allowing/forcing people to change into open PZ if they have a cleared upgrade. (This is also why it was the only flight offered).
Thus, no charge when you use the same-day change feature, but a fare difference (and a refund of the miles + copay for your MUA) if you use the regular change.
two weeks ago there was a chance that my 10 PM departure from Dulles to Frankfurt was going to go MX. While sitting at the gate I opened the app and checked my options, and lo and behold there were a whole raft of flights with interesting routings being offered to me the next day under the rationale set out above. For example, I was offered a flight the following morning to SFO on a 787 in J, connecting with the SFO to Frankfurt 773 flight, also in J. Fortunately we went out on the original plane, but if we hadn’t I probably would’ve taken this the IAD-SFO—FRA option just for the sheer novelty of it.
