I usually email the hotel and ask them what they recommend or can do. Often there are solutions that are not obvious. For example one hotel had no connecting rooms. But on contacting the hotel, found that they had a door at the end of a corridor that could be locked and they could fix open the hotel room doors. So not exactly connecting in the tarditional sence but did provide one key one door and open access to each room, with piece of corridor through in for free - excellent to store bags or extra play area :-)
