I don't know which is worse - knowing that your seat assignment has been changed, or having a squatter in your seat who refused to move/authorized by the FA.
And the one incident I remembered vividly was the GA called my partner to the podium, and we were traveling on separate PNR. The GA tried to change his seat (5A on 28-J 757), claiming that the seat was broken, and was going to put us in the last row in business class. After partner said the broken seat was OK, and realizing that we were traveling together (hence cannot tell the same story twice), he did not pursue further. The said folks who ended up in row 11? Ted Danson and
Mary Steenburgen.

My horror story: in 2002, I was flying on long-defunct Great Lakes Aviation Minneapolis-Ironwood-Iron Mountain-ORD, just to log IWD and IMT. I deplaned at IMT to use the rest room, and get a look at IMT's unimpressive terminal. Great Lakes had open seating, so I put my backpack on my seat, to clearly indicate it was occupied.
When I reboarded, I found my backpack had been dumped at the front of the airplane; because a [woman] decided she wanted my seat. When I politely asked for it back, she nastily said "There are other seats on this airplane that should be acceptable for your needs", and refused to give me my seat back.
I was just as angry as the initial poster is, but I realized there was nothing I could do about it, so I kept my feelings to myself, and moved to the row behind the mean fatso. She promptly smirked and reclined her seat as much as possible, to further crowd my space.
19 years after this incident happened, it still makes me angry to think about it, because of the total lack of respect "fatso" showed toward me.
I had the same thing happen to me. Although, the look on her face when she checked in at the company lobby for her appointment, and I happened to walk by, was priceless.

While that may be true on some airlines, but not on UA.
