Trying to book travel as a family of 4 with focus on Bonvoy properties has become a confusing and frustrating experience.
Looking for reservations at the Marriott site with a by-the-book search of 2 adults + 2 children (kids 4&6yo) will leave you with an extremely limited selection of rooms, if availability is shown at all.
And I'm not trying to cram the family into standard fare rooms either. I'm regularly finding executive floor suites at 60sqm/630sqft with a max occupancy of 2/3.
- Now could there be fire code restrictions on the maximum number of occupants that's the culprit here? In the US this is typically 100sqft/person for hotels, so that seems unlikely.
- Just book adjoining rooms you might think. While this might be a standard in the US it's increasingly rare in Europe and Asia. Even if the option exists there are all kinds of downsides to this as a family with smaller children when you'd rather have a bigger room (but not the presidential suite).
- The low bar for maximum occupancy is a company wide standard then I hear you say. Not so either, you can regularly find properties where Marriott are perfectly happy to cram 4 adults into 35 sqm. Ex. Element.
A bit of a rant I know, but coming back to travel post-baby/post-covid years to spend hours on the Marriott site (don't even bother on the bonvoy app) has put a damper on the excitement.
