Just got back from a fabulous stay at the Domes of Elounda. I had booked a family suite with sea view using points- - I stopped staying at Marriots a year before covid hit, and figured this was a good opportunity to burn some of my points. I've let my status lapse and am only a Bonvoy Silver, so was not expecting anything in the way of Bonvoy benefits when checking in. We were given the complimentary drink on the terrace and the check in info, and then told that we'd be taken by cart to our villa. My ears perked up at this, but no one mentioned an upgrade so I assumed I was incorrect. I was thus highly surprised to find myself entering a 2 bedroom luxury villa with private pool-- one of the nicest rooms in which I've ever had the fortune to stay. The villa was great, and my kids took full advantage of the pool, as well as the Domes beach, which was really nice. The beach attendants were great about finding us chairs at any time of day and bringing water and towels. Breakfast at the Blend restaurant was quite good- there was a good selection of items and great service. I was never told that I had been upgraded or what the villa benefits were, and just stumbled into the "living room" near the pool on the second day, which had snacks and a selection of drinks including pre-made cocktails. At check in we had been told that the hotel could arrange a trip to Spinalonga; I had been planning just to drive to Plaka and take the boat from there, but figured I should ask about the details. The Domes was able to arrange a private boat from the beach to/from the island for only marginally more than had I taken the public boat with my family-- the ride was fun, and when I saw the public boats discharging hundreds of passengers, I was really glad not to have opted for that route. Overall the service, accommodations, and facilities were all outstanding. I suspect I wouldn't be raving as much had I been in the originally booked suite, but they've definitely won me over and I'm looking forward to returning some day (at which time I'll likely pay up for a villa, now that I've seen how nice they are).
