There are domestic awards that really don't require a lot miles. They generally start at about 4.5K one-way for lower fare routes and there are a few cases of even lower ones (LAX-SEA is currently available from 3K each way). Sometimes they have specials (they recently had Alaska awards for 10K roundtrip back in May). You could also apply for a DL credit card, to add sign-up bonus miles.
