The language for Chase is not vague at all. It specifies as long as ‘a portion’ of the cost is paid with the card. Not vague at all to me.

While the Amex language(at least for the plat) is definitely more vague, your understanding is incorrect. While it is definitely more strict than ‘a portion’, it does say something along the lines of coverage is available if the card is used to pay in combination with certificates, vouchers or discounts provided by a frequent flyer or similar program. What exactly that means may be up for debate. I know the agent I spoke to (at AIG, who does the Amex coverge) recently after calling claimed it would cover award tickets if the taxes/fees went on the card, but I’m not convinced the language covers that (I also don’t know if there is any specification in how that would be reimbursed - Chase clearly specifies 1.5cents per point if the value is not clear.). I think of it more as being used in combination with canceled flight credit, United ETC, etc. the Amex lost luggage coverage is different though - that does specify the entire ticket must be paid for with the card for coverage
