Thanks ChicagoBound and Lori_Q for the advice. I already had a BK value meal (since I was hungry, and I thought I should order something if I'm sitting for a long time with my laptop posting notes on FT), so going to a Hawker stand isn't the most appealing thing to do, especially since at least here at Burger King, I can write messages to you FTers, check emails and stuff (don't think hawker stands have wifi yet). I've been to Singapore a number of times, so it's not like I've never seen the city...otherwise, I might just spend some time walking around (though I shouldn't do too much of that due to a recent case of plantar fasciitis).
I have a hard time believing that in this day and age, security would let me into the departure area without a boarding pass, especially when I have this big suitcase with me. So I may end up just hanging out here at the Burger King, as depressing as that may sound. Thankfully, my Toshiba Portege 2000 has long battery life (didn't bring a UK-style plug adaptor).
So is the rule for SIN mileage runs: 1) Don't check any luggage, and 2) Go directly to the Transit area (not through immigration) (unless you're adventurous and want to spend the wee hours exploring Singapore)?
