I think it will work. I have checked a bag at that re-check area that had been carry-on on my inward leg. The only difference in my case is it was on the same ticket.
EDIT -- I missed the significance of NAS. See below. Mine (above) is correct for clearing immigration and customs in MIA.

If I come from Nassau (or other select pre-clearance airports), I will get dumped into the domestic terminal and, if my next destination is on a separate ticket, I will have to collect my bag from normal baggage claim and re-check it at the normal ticket counter.
And, if I'm coming back into the US from an airport where I'm not pre-cleared at the departure city, then it seems like I could collect by bag, go through customs and check it to my next destination at the re-check area using my separate ticket I have to my next destination.
