Is rude appropriate? No, but it's sometimes understandable. Whatever the rationale, the lounge has a "one drink at a time" rule and the bartenders are required to enforce it. I would imagine their tolerance of those who deliberately skirt the rule has worn a bit thin, particularly given the crowd this particular lounge attracts.
"I resemble that remark!" (although I've not been in their for a couple of years.) Meanwhile, one rude bartender at one lounge has turned into quite the thread. Nothing unreasonable with staff enforcing a one drink served at a time nor you finish one before you get another, nor verifying the age of everyone who will be drinking the drinks served.
No excuse for rudeness, but I'd rather suffer the occasional rude barman than the liquor license pulled because the nice barman didn't do his job properly about the time the ABC comes in for an inspection, and sees "cool parent" toasting alcoholic beverages with the teenage kid.
