When I pick up the bag in Miami and then clear customs, couldn't I just head towards the connecting passengers area (still inside security), and then would I be able to show the AA re-check counter my separate Miami-Dallas ticket and have them print out a bag tag from Miami-Dallas and get my bag checked to Dallas? Thus making collecting a bag, and re-checking a bag on a separate ticket, much easier when arriving on an international flight because you can collect your bag and re-check it without ever leaving security? Am I missing something?
What you are missing is that you will have left the secure air-side, and need to redo security after the bag re-check area. However MIA has a dedicated Intl. connections security immediately after bag re-check, (or at least it did pre-virus). So you would still be right to think it would be much more convenient to check your bag there rather than go to the main check-in area.
I think it will work. I have checked a bag at that re-check area that had been carry-on on my inward leg. The only difference in my case is it was on the same ticket.
EDIT -- I missed the significance of NAS. See below. Mine (above) is correct for clearing immigration and customs in MIA.
