What happens if a reward stay is cancelled after the deadline ?

I know the points are credited back but unclear about penalties because it’s not clear specified

Cancelling Your Reservation

  • You may cancel your reservation for no charge before 11:59 PM local hotel time on July 9, 2021 (30 day[s] before arrival).
  • Please note that we will assess a fee if you must cancel after this deadline. If you have made a prepayment, we will retain all or part of your prepayment. If not, we will charge your credit card”


what kind of fee can be applied? On points or by cash ?
