I second that advice! I learned the hard way a couple of weeks ago when I had UA/TK awards, but saw LX/WK flights that were better. I tried to change online, hit the payment button and got an error that tickets could not be issued and to call. I think LX/WK were messing with their schedules and seats weren't real, so the ticketing failed. But the end result for me was no more reservation - initial UA/TK award dropped, while LX/WK not available.
