I don't recall hearing about a performance module for the 787-9. Furthermore, not only is there no subfleet listed on the UA Fleet site -- and I'm sure there would be; the people who maintain that site are awesome -- but I see that flight having been flown recently by N29985, N24976, N29978, N25982, and N28987. It's a shorter route than SFO-SIN, and I don't remember there being a specialized subfleet for that, either -- just a question about blocking seats during the winter on the westbound flight (into the wind).
BTW, EWR-JNB is (relatively) a breeze. JNB-EWR is more problematic because of the elevation at JNB. (At least it's not very hot this time of year).
